A working title, Into the Valley is a 3D third-person action-adventure hack-and-slash video game that I am currently developing in Unity. I develop it in my free time, creating every model, rig, animation, texture, and UI element by myself as well as coding the entire project. I started working on this game in October of 2018 and it's a project I plan to stick with for a very long time because it is teaching me about many different facets of game design and development as I work on it. It is also very rewarding to be able to create everything that goes into a game.
I very much enjoy the design process from start to finish, and have already improved my skills greatly by working on Into the Valley. The pipeline from concept to finished asset is one of the essential aspects of game design that I've discovered and am constantly iterating on. I really enjoy being able to compare my initial designs with the finished assets, and see them at work in-game.
I chose the style of Into the Valley to emulate games on the PlayStation 1 for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I really enjoy that style of visuals. It's partly because the limitations that low polygon counts and small texture sizes impose on developers really appeal to me. I feel that when limitations like these are in place, the challenge to make the style look good is especially fun and rewarding. I also enjoy it inexplicably. It's just a style of game I like to see, especially when it's done well. Secondly, I use the PlayStation 1 aesthetic because using low-poly models allows me to create assets quickly, meaning I can model and implement them into the game in a reasonable amount of time.
